Thursday, January 20, 2005 | Society | Five foundation trusts 'face deficits'

"We need to learn some lessons". By their very nature, NHS Hospitals are not profitable organisations. By granting them financial independence, the Government are putting them at the mercy of market forces. The message from the execs is that we're heading for a bigger and brighter future with more freedom. But with the advent of patient choice and funding on the basis of patients seen, aren't the Trusts leaving themselves vulnerable? One would like to think the Government would step in if this were the case. The eventual result will be hospital closures and inadequate community coverage.
